Urinary Incontinence Treatment

Dr Brooke O’Brien has a particular interest in diagnosing and treatment women with Urinary Incontinence.

Urinary Incontinence

Overview

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine. About one woman in three may report urinary incontinence at some time in their life.

Urinary incontinence is a distressing condition and can have a big impact on your quality of life and is often undiagnosed and undertreated as so many women find it embarrassing they they delay or do not seek medical help.

Fortunately, there are several highly effective treatments that are available.

Types of Urinary Incontinence

There are several different types of urinary incontinence. The most common are stress incontinence and urge urinary incontinence.

Stress Incontinence

Stress Incontinence (SUI) is triggered by pressure on your abdomen (for example when you laugh, cough, sneeze or do something physical like playing sport or lifting things).

Urge Incontinence

Urge Incontinence is triggered by an overactive bladder. It is characterised by strong 'urges' to go to the toilet and not making it in time.

Mixed Urinary Incontinence is when you experience both urge and stress symptoms.

Diagnosis

Determining the classification of urinary incontinence type (stress, urgency, mixed) can help direct treatment. This can often be determined by history and examination alone, and a bladder diary.

A pelvic and bladder ultrasound can be helpful to exclude pathology and determine how much urine remains in the bladder after it empties.

Rarely, more specialised tests such as urodynamics or a cystoscopy may be required.
