Laparoscopy is a procedure that allows a surgeon to look at the patient organs inside the patient’s abdomen and pelvis. Laparoscopy

Overview

Laparoscopy is a procedure that allows a surgeon, Dr Brooke O’Brien, to look at the patient organs inside the patient’s abdomen and pelvis. A laparoscope is a small camera which is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen. Laparoscopy is also known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery.

What is Laparoscopy?

The laparoscope is fitted with a light and video camera. Images of abdominal and pelvic organs are displayed on a video monitor to allow your doctor to inspect under magnification. The procedure can be recorded, and images may be taken so you may understand the nature of your condition.

The laparoscope is inserted through a small incision inside the umbilicus. The abdomen is gently inflated with carbon dioxide gas to raise the abdominal wall clear of the organs to improve the surgeon’s view of the pelvis. Other instrument(s) may be placed at other sites on the abdomen to perform the procedures.

What Happens During Laparoscopy

Dr Brooke O’Brien will start with a diagnostic laparoscopy to investigate the cause of your symptoms such as pelvic pain, problems with your periods, or infertility. The outside of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, and all the surfaces covering the inside of the pelvis will be inspected carefully.

Depending upon your preoperative consultation and likely diagnosis, usually an operative laparoscopy will be performed whilst you are under anaesthetic at the same time to treat your condition as discussed pre-operatively with Dr Brooke O’Brien.

  • Ovarian cyst
  • Endometriosis
  • Certain types of fibroids
  • Perform hysterectomy
  • Abscess or pelvic infection
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Assess fallopian tube patency for infertility
  • Perform tubal ligation or removal of the fallopian tubes for permanent contraception

Before Your Laparoscopy

If it is determined that you require laparoscopy, you will be provided with all the information you need for preparation prior to this procedure, including written information.

Depending on the type of laparoscopy you have and the reason for your laparoscopy, you will be provided with the specific instructions relevant to you. For example, this may include stopping any blood thinning medications 7 days prior to surgery and ensuring that you have a course of Movicol prior to your surgery.

After your consultation, we will provide you with all the necessary information and forms you need to complete and answer any questions you may have regarding your procedure.

After a Laparoscopy

In the case of a diagnostic laparoscopy, you may be able to go home the day of your surgery. Usually, if an operative laparoscopy is anticipated you would be counselled that you may need one night in hospital.

The downtime after laparoscopic surgery will also depend on the amount of surgery performed. It may depend on what activity you need to do after surgery. In general, you may require up to 2 weeks off any work or strenuous exercise following a laparoscopic procedure.

If you have any concerns regarding your recovery after your surgery, please contact us directly.

Our practice will contact you following your surgery to check on you and to confirm your post-operative appointment instructions.
